March 10th (written as MAR.10) is National Mario Day! It’s time to give a shout-out to our favorite Nintendo star: the beloved mustached plumber! Just imagine what the Mushroom Kingdom would look like without him – it would be filled with rogue Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and Boos and no one would want to vacation there!
Except, what is Mario without his sidekick, his best friend, and his brother: Luigi? They are like coffee and cream, bread and butter, and mashed potatoes and gravy. Each is okay on its own…but there is just something way better when they are paired together. Mario would just be Mario Brother – singular – without Luigi…and that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.
The Mario Brothers are the coolest brothers around, but there are definitely some other memorable sibling pairs out there too.
1) Long Live the King: Mufasa & Scar
Simba may have been the star of the show, but the relationship between Mufasa and Scar in Disney’s Lion King is what set the young lion’s greatness in motion.
There is no scene more heartbreaking than the one where Scar tricks Mufasa into falling to his death – all the while mocking him with “Long live the King” – as he falls. Talk about some serious sibling rivalry.
2) In Torque We Trust: Diesel Brothers
The Diesel Brothers are brothers in the “bro” sense of the word, but there’s no telling “Heavy D” Sparks and “Diesel Dave” Kiley that they aren’t family. The good friends give diesel trucks headed to the scrap heap a new home, a makeover, and a chance to fulfill their diesel dreams. Brothers from another mother are still bros in the diesel world.
3) Gross He’s My Brother: Star Wars’ Luke & Leia
Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa had a rocky start with that whole “will they, won’t they” romantic dynamic, but their sibling relationship was way cooler than some boring old romance anyway. Twins – separated at birth – who share a connection with the Force, save the galaxy (several times) and then they become a general and a Jedi Master? That’s a pretty epic sibling pair! Thankfully, they seem to have gotten over that kissing each other thing...yuck.
4) Wedgies, Anyone? Thor & Loki
There’s definitely some serious sibling rivalry going on between Marvel’s Thor and Loki. Nevertheless, the Asgardian royals always manage to help each other out in the end. It’s sort of that “only I can beat up on my brother” mentality that we all experienced with our own siblings. You have to appreciate how realistic the pair is; both brothers would happily give each other wedgies, but they are still there for each other when it counts.
5) Cuphead & Mugman
Cuphead and Mugman are an adorable pair of brothers who save each other from the Bosses, fight the devil to keep their souls, and look pretty awesome doing it all. They are always there to support each other! Is there any sibling competition between them at all? Well…is a cup or a mug the “cooler” look? Which one gets all the ladies? Is one of them jealous of the other? So much to find out! Either way, Cuphead and Mugman are the new cool video game brother pair. Mario and Luigi would be proud!
There may be a lot of interesting and complex sibling pairs out there, but there is no one quite like the Mario Brothers. They were the first famous brother pair; in fact, they made it cool to dress up with your sibling on Halloween, so that makes them the best to us.
